Balayage vs Highlights: Which is Right for You? A London Stylist’s Guide

If you have ever sat in front of the mirror wondering whether to book balayage or highlights for your next colour appointment, you are in very good company. It is one of the most common questions we get asked at The Hair Club London, and honestly, the answer depends on far more than just which one sounds prettier.

Both techniques can give you beautiful, dimensional colour, but they work in quite different ways and suit different hair types, lifestyles, and maintenance preferences. So before you book, let’s walk through exactly what each one involves, how they compare, and how to work out which is genuinely right for you.

What Are Highlights?

Highlights are the classic lightening technique most people are familiar with. Fine sections of hair are isolated using foils, painted with lightener, and wrapped to process. The foil helps the lightener work more intensely, which means highlights typically lift the hair to a brighter, lighter shade than balayage can achieve in a single appointment.
At The Hair Club London, we offer highlights in three options, depending on how much coverage you want.

T-Section Highlights

These focus on the parting and hairline, which is where most of us notice colour fade or regrowth first. T-section highlights are a brilliant way to brighten the face, refresh your look, and keep your colour feeling fresh without committing to a full head every time.

Half Head Highlights

Applied across the top half of the head, half head highlights give you lovely dimension where it shows most, particularly when your hair is worn down. It’s a popular middle-ground option and often the right choice for anyone wanting noticeable lift without the investment of a full head.

Full Head Highlights

The full works. Every section from root to tip gets attention, which gives you all-over brightness and a multi-tonal finish. This is the option to go for if you want a significant change or if you wear your hair tied up often and need the lightness to show throughout.

What Is Balayage?

Balayage, which comes from the French word meaning “to sweep”, is a freehand painting technique. Rather than isolating sections in foil, your stylist paints the lightener directly onto the surface of the hair, working with your natural movement and face shape to place lightness exactly where it will catch the light most beautifully.

The result is a softer, more blended finish that mimics the way hair naturally lightens in the sun. Because the lightener is painted on rather than saturated through a foil, balayage tends to give a gentler, more diffused result with no harsh regrowth line.

The Key Differences Between Balayage and Highlights

Both techniques lighten the hair, but that is where the similarities largely end. Here are the differences that matter most when you are deciding.

The Finish

Highlights give you a brighter, more uniform result with defined pieces of lightness running through the hair. Balayage gives you a softer, more natural, sun-kissed finish with lightness concentrated more toward the mid-lengths and ends.

If you love the look of a crisp, polished blonde with definition throughout, highlights are probably your friend. If you prefer something lived-in, effortless, and a little beachy, balayage is likely the better fit.

Maintenance

This is often the deciding factor. Highlights, particularly full head, require more regular upkeep because the lightness starts at the root. Most clients come in every 8 to 12 weeks to maintain the look.

Balayage, by contrast, is famously low maintenance. Because the lightness is painted from the mid-lengths down, there is no obvious regrowth line as it grows out. Many clients can stretch their appointments to every 3 to 4 months, sometimes longer.

Damage and Hair Health

Because highlights use foils and often lift the hair closer to the root, they can be slightly more demanding on the hair’s condition, especially if you have previously coloured or chemically treated hair. Balayage, being more surface-applied, tends to be a gentler option.

That said, both techniques are perfectly safe in skilled hands, and we always assess your hair’s condition during your complimentary colour consultation before recommending an approach. A bond-strengthening treatment like K18 can also be added to either service to support your hair through the process.

Cost and Time

Highlights and balayage are priced similarly at The Hair Club London, starting from £135 for a full head or balayage. Both typically take between two and a half and four hours depending on hair length, thickness, and the result you are after.

Which One Should You Choose?

Here is how we usually guide clients through the decision during consultation.

Choose Highlights If

You want brightness right up to the root, you like a more defined and uniform colour, you are happy to commit to salon visits every couple of months, or you are trying to achieve a significantly lighter shade overall.

Choose Balayage If

You want a soft, natural-looking result, you hate the look of obvious regrowth, you prefer lower maintenance colour, or your lifestyle means you cannot get to the salon as regularly as you would like.

Or Consider Both

Some of our favourite colour work combines both techniques. A few foils placed strategically around the face paired with balayage through the lengths can give you the brightness of highlights where it matters most, with the softness and ease of balayage everywhere else. This is something we often suggest during consultation when a client is torn between the two.

What Happens at Your Colour Consultation?

Whichever direction you are leaning, we always recommend booking a complimentary colour consultation first, particularly if you have not been to us before or if you are thinking about a significant change. It gives us time to properly look at your hair, chat through your inspiration photos, understand your lifestyle, and recommend a technique that will genuinely work for you.

We will also carry out a skin test at this point if you are a new client, which needs to be done at least 48 hours before your first colour appointment. It is a quick, legally required step that keeps you safe and lets us proceed with confidence on the day.

A Note on Toners

Whether you choose highlights or balayage, the finish often comes down to the toner. A well-chosen toner is what takes freshly lightened hair from yellow or brassy to that beautiful, expensive-looking shade you saw in your inspiration photo. We include toning where needed to perfect your result and will talk you through how to maintain the tone at home, including recommending the right shampoos and any top-up treatments to book in between colours.
