Semi-permanent colour is one of the most popular services we offer across both of our Battersea salons, and it’s easy to see why. It adds richness and shine, softens the first signs of grey, and lets you enjoy a new shade without signing up for months of regrowth appointments. The most common question we hear in the chair, though, is a simple one: how long will it last?
The honest answer is that it depends on a handful of factors, some of which are within your control. In this guide, we’ll explain how semi-permanent colour works, what affects its lifespan, and how you can keep your colour looking fresh for as long as possible.
The Short Answer
For most clients, semi-permanent colour lasts somewhere between six and twelve washes, which usually works out at around four to six weeks. Some people find their colour lingers a little longer, particularly if they wash their hair less often or have chosen a deeper shade.
What makes semi-permanent colour so appealing is the way it fades. Rather than leaving a sharp line at the root as your hair grows, it gently softens with every wash. There’s no awkward grow-out phase, which is exactly why so many of our clients near Clapham Junction choose it as their go-to colour.
How Semi-Permanent Colour Works
To understand why semi-permanent colour fades, it helps to know what it’s doing to your hair. Permanent colour uses a developer to open the hair cuticle and change the pigment inside the hair shaft. That’s why it lasts until it grows out, and why permanent colour clients eventually need a root touch-up. If that’s the route you’re on, our guide on how often you should book a regrowth tint walks you through the timings.
Semi-permanent colour works differently. It deposits colour onto and just beneath the outer layer of the hair, without lifting your natural pigment. Because the colour molecules sit closer to the surface, they gradually wash away over time. This gentler approach is also why it can’t make your hair lighter, only richer, deeper, or more toned.
What Affects How Long Your Colour Lasts
Two people can leave our salon with the same service and see quite different results a month later. Here’s why.
Hair Porosity
Porosity describes how easily your hair absorbs and holds onto moisture and colour. Highly porous hair, often the result of heat styling, sun exposure, or previous chemical treatments, soaks colour up quickly but tends to release it just as fast. Healthier, less porous hair usually holds semi-permanent colour more evenly and for longer.
The Shade You Choose
Some colours are naturally more fleeting than others. Reds and coppers are famously quick to fade because of the size of their colour molecules. Darker, cooler shades generally hold on longer and fade more subtly, so you may barely notice the change for the first few weeks.
How Often You Wash
Since semi-permanent colour gradually rinses away, every wash takes a little with it. If you wash daily, you’ll see a faster fade than someone who washes two or three times a week. Dry shampoo can be a helpful friend here.
Water Temperature and London’s Hard Water
Hot water lifts the hair cuticle, allowing colour to escape more easily, so a lukewarm or cool rinse makes a noticeable difference. London is also known for its hard water, and the mineral build-up it leaves behind can dull colour and make hair feel rough over time. This is something we see regularly with clients across Battersea and SW11.
Heat Styling and Sun Exposure
Straighteners, curling tongs, and hot blow dries all speed up fading, as does strong sunlight. If you spend plenty of time outdoors, our tips on protecting your hair through summer in the city are worth a read, as the same principles apply to keeping colour vibrant.
How to Make Semi-Permanent Colour Last Longer
The good news is that a few small changes to your routine can stretch the life of your colour considerably.
Wait Before Your First Wash
Try to leave your hair unwashed for 48 to 72 hours after your appointment. This gives the colour time to settle, and many clients find it makes a real difference to how long their shade holds.
Switch to Colour-Safe Products
Sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners designed for coloured hair are much kinder to semi-permanent colour. Clarifying and anti-dandruff shampoos, on the other hand, can strip colour quickly, so save those for when you’re ready to refresh. Your stylist can recommend products that suit your hair type during your appointment.
Turn Down the Heat
Lower the temperature on your heated tools and always use a heat protectant. Letting your hair air-dry when you can will also help protect both your colour and your hair’s overall condition.
Add a Conditioning Treatment
Healthier hair holds colour better, so treatments are a worthwhile investment. Our K18 Treatment repairs damage at a deeper level and can be added to any appointment, while our Hydrating Conditioning Treatment is a quick, affordable boost for dry or tired hair. If hard water build-up is dulling your shade, our SDL Detox treatment is a great way to reset before your next colour.
Is Semi-Permanent Colour Right for You?
Semi-permanent colour suits a wide range of clients. It’s ideal if you’d like to blend early greys, add depth and shine to your natural colour, or experiment with a new shade without long-term commitment. Our Semi-Permanent Root Colour is also a lovely, softer alternative to a regrowth tint for clients who want to avoid a harsh line as their hair grows.
That said, it isn’t the right fit for everyone. If you’re hoping to go lighter, you’ll need a lightening service instead, and our guide to choosing between balayage and highlights is a great place to start. And if a previous colour hasn’t turned out the way you hoped, semi-permanent colour won’t always solve the problem. In that case, it’s worth reading what to expect from a colour correction appointment before booking anything.
Whatever you decide, every colour journey with us starts with a complimentary colour consultation. We’ll also carry out a quick skin test at least 48 hours before your first colour appointment, which is required by law and helps keep you safe.
